Courtney and Brett are two talented professionals that call San Antonio home. After two years of marital bliss, they decided to purchase their first house in the Lone Star District and closed just in time for Christmas. With so many new rooms in the house to tackle, they reached out to BLB to design their new rooftop entertainment space this spring.

Their new David Weekley Homes community is in the perfect location. Nestled in the heart of the city, their neighborhood is just a few convenient steps away from Blue Star District, Southtown and the Historic Riverwalk. Additionally, their house provides priceless views of the Tower of Americas, Pioneer Flour Mills and Downtown San Antonio. Busy careers and adventurous travels take up most of the couples’ time, so I was thrilled to visit their new home and have the opportunity to design the third floor space.

The living space was about 12 by 15 feet in size with 9 foot high ceilings, wall-to-wall windows, an adjoined bathroom and closet on one end and rooftop deck on the other. As new construction and a new space, I was so excited to help Courtney and Brett turn the bonus room into a relaxing place where they could unwind and watch a movie or entertain friends and family on the weekend.

 The first piece of the puzzle would be selecting the perfect seating. We agreed that a sectional would provide the best comfort for the couple to lounge on quiet evenings, but also accommodate a large crowd on fun game nights. We began our search at the nearby West Elm in the Historic Pearl and West Elm Outlet up I-35 North in San Marcos. After evaluating different shapes, configurations and upholstery, Courtney and Brett chose an L-shaped sectional from West Elm’s classic Andes collection in twill and stone.

 While we waited for the sofa to arrive, I was on the hunt for the perfect rug for the space. Courtney was able to find a rug she liked for her dining room at the West Elm Outlet, but nothing in their inventory sparked her interest for the third floor. While on one of my weekly trips to Home Goods, I spotted a beautiful pastel paint-drip rug from Jaipur Living that I thought might just be “the one.” Covered with light blue, yellow and baby pink hues, it would add just the right amount of femininity to the gender-neutral space. I quickly took and text photos of it to Courtney and awaited her opinion. She loved it too – the colors, quality and price – and raced over to purchase it that same day. In my opinion, this gorgeous rug would end up making the most impact in the room and would draw eyes immediately based on its beauty. I couldn’t wait to see how it looked once rolled out on their hardwood floors.

After striking gold with the rug, I decided to visit the new Living Spaces store that had just opened in northwest San Antonio. I’d heard so many great things and was excited to view the showroom. We found a reclaimed wood media console and coffee table that would match the new sectional’s black legs and mid-century modern style. Courtney also found a few solid pillows to complement their new sofa and ordered two Boho chic pillows and throw I’d sourced earlier from Anthropologie for the original design board. With windows and their TV taking up most of the walls in the room, I wanted to do something minimal on the opposite walls by the entrance and bathroom door. We decided on two wooden picture ledges from Pottery Barn and modern black picture frames from West Elm to display photos and artwork that the couple could pick out in the future. Thanks to Courtney and Brett’s eclectic taste and desire to incorporate hints of San Antonio throughout their home, they found some amazing local art prints to display that reflect their interests and city views from the space. I was also able to find and purchase an old Hemisfair poster from the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio from a local vintage storeowner, Laura via Instagram. It would be the perfect colorful piece to hang at the end of the project and a meaningful housewarming gift from BLB for the sweet couple.

 I couldn’t be happier about how this project turned out. Everything from the bright natural light, pastel and contrasting black color palette and San Antonio city theme just makes me smile from ear to ear. The space is so comfortable, inviting and livable – exactly the way a living room should look and make one feel. Take a look:

 As BLB will be leaving San Antonio soon (I’ll share all the deets on my next blog entry, I promise!), this project was definitely bittersweet, but I am so happy that Courtney and Brett will be making amazing memories in their new San Antonio home and this beautiful living space for many years to come.
