Outdoor Oasis

Anybody else just itching to go outside lately? As the Coronavirus has suddenly confined us to our homes, many have been bringing the outside in with new house plants and even faux greenery to liven up our spaces. On the other hand, now is an awesome time to bring the inside out, and create living spaces on our patios, balconies and backyards to enjoy being outside this summer while staying safe at home. I recently teamed up with one of my favorite Wayfair brands, All Modern to help my each of you create the perfect outdoor space for you and your family!

Before putting my bungalow in San Antonio on the market last year, I took the time to spruce up each room for the real estate photos, including my back deck. I probably spent more time outside staging it for prospective buyers and my open house than I did in my entire three years of living there! Now that I’m living in smaller quarters in San Francisco, I’m REALLY regretting not taking full advantage back then and enjoying my front porch, backyard and patio to the fullest. Although it is few and far between, finding a new apartment to call home that includes some form of an outdoor space for Ralph and I is my TOP priority!

As we manage to navigate these strange times indoors indefinitely, here’s an easy guide to building an outdoor oasis of your own that’ll satisfy all your senses:

SEATING

First things first! When creating a new living space, your first priority should be a place to sit down and relax. Depending on your needs and what you enjoy doing most, choose between conversation seating, a dining set, sweet spot to lounge, or all of the above!

I love this Jameown Rattan set for many reasons! First, it’s super modern, and gives a fresh twist on traditional wicker patio furniture. Second, the wicker and black combo gives it the versatility to mix and match with any color scheme, patio stain or existing furniture. The weather-resistant seat and back cushions also come in three colors: navy, beige and white. Third, this conversation set provides enough seating if you’re having a couple of friends over for cocktails or you’re just enjoying some alone time with a cup of coffee and a good book. It also comes with a glass-top coffee table large enough to hold plates of appetizers for you and your guests or board games for a fun night in.

CHARACTER

Rugs aren’t just for indoor spaces! When hunting for the right outdoor rug, you don’t have to sacrifice style for durability. Frame the outdoor space you’re decorating with a solid or patterned area rug that’ll serve as a foundation for the room you’re filling, but also a conversation-starter based on its character. Whether it’s a screened-in porch, open patio or covered porch, layering furniture on top of an outdoor rug will instantly make the space feel more clean, inviting and collected.

This Vanburen Southwestern rug is available in six different sizes and will add the perfect pop of color, texture and style to any outdoor space. It’s soft enough for kids, durable for pets and stain-resistant for accident-prone clutz adults like me! LOL I wouldn’t be afraid of spilling some salsa or wine on this guy. The low-pile construction is easy to clean and built to last.

AMBIANCE

There’s no need to overdo it with the furniture and clutter your outdoor space like we can easily do inside, but don’t be afraid to add a little bit of sass and style that’ll encourage you to go outside! Whether you keep things neutral and tranquil or add lots of color creating your own tropical rainforest, pull in items that support the functionality of the space, as well as your personality and the mood you wish to set.

Outdoor décor such as throw pillows, string lights, planters and garden stools are a great place to start. All Modern offers all of the above, and in a variety of metals and colors that will complement your interior space. And don’t forget the greenery! Just because you’re already outside doesn’t mean you can’t add some more plants! Take a stroll down the aisles of your local nursery or home improvement store and embrace your blooming green thumb. If you not the best plant lady, don’t worry – I got you! Start with some low-maintenance options like snake plants, succulents, philodendron, palms or yucca before investing in that coveted fiddle leaf fig tree.

Based on the tips above, here’s an example of an easy outdoor oasis you can build on your own porch, patio or balcony!

Spending more time at home has definitely put everything into perspective. I find myself not caring as much about how I look or what I wear. I’m more concerned about others, how I feel and how the limited space I occupy affects that. No matter how big or small the changes, focusing on what you can control. Bringing a little more peace into your life with your home’s indoor and outdoor spaces can make all the difference. I know these past few months of quarantine have been tough, but as we enter Memorial Day weekend, let’s remember to pause and take a moment to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and be grateful for the safety, freedom and privileges we still have during these uncertain times.
