ONE ROOM CHALLENGE - WEEK SIX
It’s ORC Week SIX and although we’re nearing the end of the One Room ChallengeⓇ, there is still SO much to do!
First up, we’re installing the Spoonflower wallpaper! My wallpaper installer, Rafael came by to prime the walls well in case I wish to remove the wallpaper in the future without leaving damage. He returned the next day to install the rolls where I specified, and I’m absolutely OBSESSED!
The Spoonflower Becca wallpaper is beyond gorgeous! Its mix of bold and neutral colors, the warmth, the print, and beautiful green hue has surpassed all my expectations! I was still undecided about my decision to not wallpaper the slanted walls and ceiling, but at this point, I wanted to focus on receiving the final furniture pieces on time and staging and styling the space.
First, I located a beautiful carved mango wood casegood built in Indonesia that would serve as the media cabinet and ample storage in the room. As the kids get more than enough screen time at home, school, and on their iPad, so I opted not to mount or bring in a TV for now. It’s not a necessary expense, and I would love to invest in a portable projector that I could pull out for movie nights if needed. For additional storage, I also found two short bookshelves similar in wood color that I’d position on the shorter walls at the rear of the room to store board games, books and art supplies.
Next up, seating! The sleeper sofa I ordered would be arriving during the 11th hour, so I’d focus on the chairs I’d be adding to the room to complement it. I found the cutest and most comfortable leopard print swivel chair at a local retailer, then raced to another location to find a second one. I managed to fit both in my Jeep and brought them home. I was also swooning over a cognac tan leather lounge chair and matching ottoman I’d name “Auntie Am’s chair” that I could relax in while the kids play. It was a bit pricey, but I drove an hour north of Atlanta to locate it at an outlet store for 40% off! Lastly, my local handyman, Travis installed the rattan swing for me, mounting it from the ceiling in one of the window nooks. A single tear may have fallen from my eye once it was up – it is just so perfect!
I was so unsure about replacing the three flush mount recessed lights aligned at the center of the room. They provided decent light in addition to the two windows, but despite the lower ceiling, I still wanted to go with something grander in the middle to serve as a centerpiece for the ceiling. Since I didn’t choose to wallpaper the ceiling, I selected a coral flower semi-flush light fixture. Once it arrived, I asked Travis to install it too. When I took it out of the box, I was actually surprised by its size – it appeared much smaller than I imagined. After it was mounted, I decided I should purchase two more to replace the other recessed lights, but low and behold – the website showed they were now on backorder for TWO months! *insert tears here* I could go with another color than coral, but wasn’t sure how that would look, so figured I should just suck it up and risk the wait. This would be my second hiccup in the project. I ordered the lights and crossed my fingers they’d arrive in time.
Because the kids and I may need to easily move furniture around when using the room, I decided to go light on the coffee table. Originally, I wanted to buy a large round or rectangle-shaped block of wood-looking table for the kids to sit around and play board games on, but the higher the quality, the heavier it would likely be, and tougher for my 5-year-old niece to move without the help of her brothers.
So I found these cool rattan nesting tables to match the Boho vibe I was building with the color scheme that matched the new swing. They were lightweight and could also be used as benches in the future. Once I rolled the new rug out (it is SO soft, y’all!) I centered them tables in the room amongst the chairs and sat back to admire the progress made.
There are still so many elements of the space that are missing, but hopefully once the sofa arrives, I’ll regain my excitement and still have the energy to stage and style the space!
Be Blessed,
Amber
