ONE ROOM CHALLENGE - WEEK SEVEN
Hey ORC friends! So the loft space is slowly, but surely coming together. Here’s a recap of what’s completed and arrived, and what I have yet to do!
95% of the furniture is here, and I just received notification that the custom sleeper sofa I ordered was now scheduled for delivery! Hallelujah! Although two of my three flower light fixtures won’t arrive by the deadline due to additional backorders, I have table lamps that can add extra light if needed, a new desk for the other window nook, and the remainder of the space just needed accessories and a little Auntie Am love.
The Spoonflower Becca wallpaper is still so gorgeous, so much so, that I’m afraid to add any artwork to the walls. LOL! There aren’t many opportunities to do so because of how short they are, but I did have a few pieces that I wanted to hang to give the room some character. Because the neutral wall above the sofa seemed so empty to me, I purchased a few basket wall discs to adhere to the wall to add some texture, culture, and interest to the blank space. They were handcrafted by young female artisans in Uganda and made of raffia and banana fibers – I immediately fell in love with the look and touch of Africa added in the room.
I’d also been collecting several accent décor pieces and knick knacks to style the surfaces and a few picture frames to add photos of my nephews and niece throughout the space. I already had a few board games in my possession, but decided to buy a couple more game night staples to the shelves in addition to coloring books, drawing and construction paper, crayons and markers for the kids and I to color with. With a little space left on the bookshelves, I decided to create a snack bar with non-perishable items for the kids to enjoy while upstairs.
What’s a sofa or chair without pillows and throws!? I wanted to make sure the space felt cozy and was comfortable in every corner. So I purchased an assortment of pillows in different shapes, sizes, styles and patterns to tie all of the seats together. My favorites are the Kuba cloth and Black Girl Magic pillows that reflect my race, culture, and identity. Just as there are Black faces seen in artwork throughout my home, I think it’s very important to have representation and cultural imagery in the loft space for the kids to view too.
Lastly, plants! I snagged a few from downstairs and local stores to give the loft the greenery it needed, but selections that were easy to care for and would thrive in the low-light space. A few palms, ZZ, and snake plants in baskets later, I think I’ve finally wrapped up the room!
Are you ready for the reveal?!?!?! I know, I know, but you’re going to have to wait a few more days! Get excited and see you next week!
Be Blessed,
Amber
