ONE ROOM CHALLENGE – WEEK ONE

Hi everyone! My name is Amber Guyton and I’m the interior designer, blogger, and content creator behind Blessed Little Bungalow! I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be participating in the Fall ’22 One Room ChallengeⓇ with Spoonflower and Apartment Therapy!

For the new kids on the block… I started Blessed Little Bungalow back in 2016 after decorating my entire renovated 1948 bungalow in San Antonio, Texas in less than a week. Since then, my blog and social media following quickly grew and transformed my former hobby and side hustle into a nationally known brand and business.

I’ve served dozens of clients across the country designing colorful, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing residential and commercial projects. A passionate champion for personal finance, I believe that interior design should not be a luxury reserved for the privileged few and I’m committed to democratizing the industry one home at a time.

This will be my FIRST One Room ChallengeⓇ and I’m so thrilled to be partnering with Spoonflower for the project! For those not familiar with Spoonflower, they are an online wallpaper, home decor, and fabric marketplace featuring print-on-demand products sustainably printed with more than a million designs created by independent artists all over the world!

These independent artists receive royalties when their designs are purchased, which gives us as consumers the wonderful opportunity to directly support creatives that we may not have discovered otherwise! I’ve shopped for wallpaper for my own home and client projects in the past on Spoonflower, so I’m so excited to work with them and Apartment Therapy on this project!

Last year, I relocated from San Francisco, California back to Atlanta, Georgia and purchased a new construction bungalow in the heart of the city. Upon move-in, the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home was a completely blank slate. Every inch of the 1,800 square foot house was painted builder beige and the craftsman-style home desperately needed more color and character. So, over the next six months, I painted, wallpapered, and decorated the entire first floor of the home including the living, dining, and kitchen spaces, living room, guest room, main bath, home office and master suite. Each room is now filled with bold colors and patterns, brass accents, updated lighting, furnishings and statement artwork that made my house a home.

AFTER:

It’s been over a year since I updated all these spaces. However, there was one space that I neglected and completely ignored until now — the loft. The 275 square foot space is upstairs open and visible to the floor below. It has gabled ceilings, 2 windows, 1 door leading to my HVAC unit storage space and 4 smaller doors giving access to attic space. My neighbors who have identical floor plans use their lofts as home offices, but with mine set up downstairs in one of the bedrooms, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with mine. I was at a bit of a loss, until I thought about these three little faces…

My older sister, brother-in-law and their children live in Chattanooga, Tennessee, about 2 hours north of Atlanta. A big part of the reason I moved back to Atlanta was to be closer to my parents in South Carolina and family and friends in the Southeast. It feels great now not having to jump on a plane to see my loved ones and knowing that a visit to me is just a podcast episode-drive away.

My nephews, Collin and Corbin, and niece, Carmen LOVE visiting their Auntie Am’s house. But when they visit, there’s not a kid-friendly space for them to play in. The coffee table downstairs is glass with sharp edges and the main floor is filled with “adult,” fragile décor that is at risk with a 9-, 7-, and 5-year-old running around. Because of this, my nephews and niece would always head up to the loft upstairs to play games, color, run around, and cartwheel. Although only my old apartment sofa and a few storage items were up there, it was their retreat for fun times and weekend sleepovers. That was it! I’d transform the loft to a space tailored to and for them — a multi-functional place they could call their own that would grow with them over time and easily convert to a flex space or home gym in the future. What an amazing gift, I can’t wait to get started!

Over the next 8 weeks, I’ll be transforming my loft into a warm and welcoming home-away-from-home for my nephews and niece, Collin, Corbin, and Carmen. During this One Room ChallengeⓇ, I’ll share my plan, purchases, challenges, pivots, and highs and lows throughout the process. Tune in as I partner with Spoonflower and Apartment Therapy to showcase the before, after, and all the squiggly lines in between! I hope you’ll join me!

Be Blessed,

Amber
