Back in March, I met the kindest 15-year-old young man and his lovely mom, Mimi. After spending an hour with him that Sunday afternoon, it was quite evident why Mimi wanted to treat her deserving son to a bedroom makeover.
Mimi and her son, Will live in San Antonio, TX. Their home has two master bedrooms, one on each floor. Will’s is upstairs along with his bathroom and an extra bedroom he uses as a study and game room. Will was a bit quiet and shy, but smart and all smiles as he was excited about what would become of his new space.
His bedroom was completely gray and walnut – four walls recently painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Web Gray, and walnut wooden floors, doors and furniture. The heavy well-crafted walnut furniture was handed down to Will from his great-grandfather (how special is that?). In addition to the color palette swatch for the interior paint, Mimi handed me a photo of a room Will really liked.
Similar to Mimi, will has spectacular taste and an eye for mid-century modern furniture. He’d be keeping his existing walnut dresser and chest, bookcase and king size bed, but desired an upholstered headboard, nightstands and fun lighting on each side of the bed. He was open to changing the room layout and didn’t mind mixing metals and textures like leather. Although he didn’t want much color or pillows, he loves blankets and was open to my ideas as long as the room was comfortable. Using the moody bedroom example Mimi provided and getting Will’s okay to add a smidge of color to the dark space, I began building mood boards for Will to consider.
After Will made his selections, Mimi began ordering furnishings I advised to purchase online and I went shopping for his bedding, pillows and knick knacks to surfaces in the space from local stores like HomeGoods and At Home. Once the rug, headboard and larger items, I returned to their home to help them assemble the bed and rearrange the space. We all fell completely in love with the Blurred Landscape Rug in Blue Teal from West Elm that provided the perfect pop of color to the dim space.
Once the cluster pendant lighting was installed, Will’s photography framed and his guitars were mounted on the wall, the room was finally complete! Though only few things were changed, the space had a completely different look and feel - one that was perfect for Will.
Thank you, Mimi and Will for inviting me into your home and lives to create Will’s new bedroom! Any high school student would love to call this space his or her own, and I’m so glad I was able to bring this gift to life from a loving Mom to an amazing son!
