Last fall, a busy family of five contacted BLB to help transform their 3-year old’s nursery into a “big girl room.” Though the space was incredibly small, I was up for the fun challenge!
Cydney’s daughter, Peyton was outgrowing her current room in more ways than one. They recently converted her crib into a toddler bed, but the current décor and compact former nursery wasn’t a space that Peyton wanted to spend time in. Cydney wanted help making the room more than just a place to sleep, but also an inviting and comfortable space for Peyton to independently play, read and grow into for years to come.
BEFORE:
Cydney had a few requests for the transformation. First, she wanted to keep the space neutral with touches of pastels like purple or mint green. She wanted Peyton’s room to be feminine space for a girl, but without being filled with every shade of pink and princess characters. Because of the small space, she wanted to stay away from dark woods and bulky furniture, repurpose as much existing furniture as possible, and create a whimsical room that would ignite Peyton’s imagination while remaining practical and functional. After creating a few different looks, the family selected this pastel mood board for Peyton’s Place!
MOOD BOARD:
When transforming a small bedroom, specifically a child’s room, here are a few tips to making the most of every inch of the space:
Keep it light
Although we wanted to add color to the space, we kept the walls a light grey color and only added removable wallpaper to one wall in an attempt to elongate the room. All of the furniture selections where white and we kept the windows dressed with sheer white curtains to allow more nature light into the space.
Focus on function
When it comes to furniture, less is more in a small space. Only include pieces that are absolutely needed for rest, storage, and functionality. Clear the clutter, use baskets and shelving for organization, and maintain as much white space as possible. With the exception of the new nightstand and seating, we kept the furnishings to a minimum, mounted, or tucked away to maximize the limited square footage.
Transition over time
Even though the existing convertible crib would turn into a toddler bed, we replaced it with a more mature twin bed that Peyton could grow up with. The bed also lacked a foot board, giving the growing child more space to get around the room. Simple changes like removing the mounted bookcase and adding a writing desk would allow post-toddler Peyton to adjust the room to her size, activities, and interests over time.
I’m so in love with how Peyton’s Place turned out, take a look…
AFTER:
Thank you, Cydney for allowing me to virtually come into your home and transform Peyton’s room! I hope it gives her joy for years to come with exciting days and restful nights of slumber.
