When I moved back to Atlanta 3 years ago, one of the first things on my to-do list was to find a new natural hair stylist for my curls. One of my good friends immediately recommended Stylez by Roz and (after finally getting off that wait list LOL) I’ve been in love with her ever since!

Roseline Watkins is so much more than just a professional and licensed stylist, beautician, and cosmetologist. She’s a God-fearing wife, mother, friend, therapist, comedian, entrepreneur, and incredible human being. Specializing in natural hair care and color, I’ve trusted Roz with my natural hair when in need of a blow out, trim, and color, but little did I know, she was also admiring my interior design skills and when the time came, asked me to help her give her salon space a new look. She wanted to do so in a weekend LOL but was later convinced that good design (no matter how small the space) takes time.

BEFORE:

Roz has had a salon space in Salon Lofts in Reynoldstown, Atlanta for several years. She decorated it with her favorite colors – magenta, blush, and rose gold. Although it was a decent and inviting space for her clients, she wanted it to have a more mature, therapeutic feel for everyone that entered. The fellow Black women she served have busy careers and lives, and escape to her salon for a much-needed moment of peace and confidence boost. I was excited to design an elevated environment that would exude those emotions.

MOOD BOARD:

For the design there were a few priorities that would need to be addressed. First, we created a color palette that was neutral and soothing, with just enough contrast and pop of color. I’d been dying to use a new wall mural designed by my friends at Forbes Masters and Mitchell Black in a space, and the Boulder Beach mural would give the salon space a subtle abstract yet artsy vibe. We applied the mural to two of the walls, then used the classic Sherwin-Williams’ Tricorn Black for the others. Using black as the foundational color in the palette, we’d update all her furniture in black with wood and gold accents, except for the new waiting/dryer area chairs in a deep terracotta rust hue. We reattached the existing floating cabinet near the new massaging shampoo chair and added a new salon station with fluted wood facings and black sides. Roz also needed a place to work in between clients, so with limited square footage for additional storage, we added a ladder desk in the corner where she could display products to sell and answer emails and take calls in a seat other than her salon chair. Lastly, we updated the walls with a new mirror, battery operated sconces (very renter friendly!), coat hooks, artwork, and her framed licenses (because this is a real salon over here!). Although this is probably the smallest space I’ve ever designed, its transformation was anything but small! Roz and I are so proud of the outcome.

Nothing warms my heart more than helping fellow Black women entrepreneurs with their commercial spaces and this project has my heart so full. Love you, Roz!
