I love working with couples, especially power couples like George and Majesty! Last summer, they moved into a new row house and sought out BLB’s assistance to help them decorate it to their taste and style!
The Acheampongs are quite the pair. George is a financial advisor and investments professional, founder of CapitalWize, Financial Planning and Investment Advisory Firm, and Melanin Money and Make Cents 2 Me. George is passionate about self-improvement, personal finance and wealth building. His mission: “To increase the quality of life of others, keep families together, break generational curses and to build lasting legacies of significance, purpose and worth.” Majesty is a human resources professional, Charlotte-based influencer, podcaster and content coach. She’s worked with several local and national brands, been featured as a keynote speaker and events and conferences, and launched her own conference, Ignite Your Influence that helps female creatives elevate their influence, impact and income. Having so much in common and being an admirer their hustle and entrepreneurial drive, I was super excited to work with the couple.
When I first visited their home, they’d recently moved in. It was a complete blank canvas: modern and full of clean lines with a grayscale aesthetic. The challenge was to decorate the large home while maintaining its chicness and minimalist style. Though the wanted to tackle each room, we decided to collaborate on the spaces they needed help with the most, the living room and master suite.
George and Majesty’s must-haves for their master bedroom included a queen-size bed preferably with a high back and character, two nightstands and lamps, a vanity/desk area for Majesty’s content creation and additional seating to relax and recharge in the space. We loved Vant’s platform beds and the thought of the customizable panels going all the way up the wall to take advantage of the great ceiling height. Once the bed was decided on, the rest of the room was easy, so we spent the majority of our time focused on the living room. There was a bit of trial and error experienced with finding the perfect sectional for the couple to lounge and relax on, but once found, it was well-worth the challenge! George rearranged the existing media cabinet and shelving, so the only additional furniture needed was a minimalistic coffee table, area rug and accent décor.
George is Ghanaian-American, and the couple is very passionate about African history and culture. They were excited to incorporate some aspect of this in their home. Immediately I went on the hunt for local, national and international artists and photographers that we could include in their living space. I shared a list of suggestions with the couple including photographer, David Ballam. His Omo Collection of portraits based out of southern Ethiopia caught George and Majesty’s eye. They selected two of the portraits to blow up for the living room, Hamer Woman II and Mursi Woman II of the Omo Valley. Once ordered, printed and framed, the photography was BEYOND stunning and immediately became the focal point of both the space and entire house.
Once each of the larger items were in place, it was just a matter of finding the right knick-knacks and décor items that would complete each room. I found some African masks and table décor at a local HomeGoods and picked up plants from Lowes that would liven up the living room. Before we knew it, their home felt complete!
Working with the Acheampongs was such a great experience. This project was a great example of effortless collaboration and how sometimes you have everything it takes to tackle a home makeover yourself, you just may need a little help perfecting it to your taste. I’m so grateful to George and Majesty for welcoming me into their new home to assist them with styling their space!
