The biggest compliment I can receive as a designer and business owner is referred and repeat business. It means that one of my clients was so happy with me and my work, they decided to ask for more help or send someone else needing help my way. My darling client, Jaméz from #ProjectRegalRetreat did just that.
After transforming Jaméz’s master bedroom, she asked for my assistance in giving the living room and dining space also on the main floor of her home a bit of a facelift. After living in her house for five years, she wasn’t in love with how the space made her feel. Jaméz was also unsure about the current layout, furniture and bland color scheme. She needed the main floor to feel inviting from the moment one entered and offer comfortable, child-friendly seating for family, hosting bible study and warmly welcoming other guests. Now knowing Jaméz’s style, wants and needs, I was excited to help! Here’s where things started:
BEFORE:
My first instinct was to break up the crowded room by removing the bulky furniture including the oversized sofas and bar-height dining table and chairs. We’d replace these furnishings with contemporary and mid-century modern options that lightened the load of the space. A new area rug, super-comfy sectional sofa in light grey paired with two contrasting cobalt blue accent chairs would give the living room a new shape and fresh look. Mimicking the new navy blue wall in Jaméz’s master bedroom, the color palette of the main floor would be cool tones of blue hues, grey and silver metallic accents.
Next, the dining room required seating for six, preferably with upholstered seating, but we didn’t want to overwhelm the space with too much furniture. Initially, I wanted to use a glass and/or round dining table to meet Jaméz’s needs with both minimalism and a modern touch, but she had concerns about a glass table being kid and busy-woman friendly when it came to cleaning. We ultimately selected a walnut mid-century modern dining table and silver and blue patterned Parsons chairs for the space. To ensure the space wouldn’t feel crowded, we decided not to add additional stool seating to the adjacent kitchen bar until the project was complete.
Once all of the larger furniture pieces came in, I flew in to tackle all of the remaining décor including pillows, throws, artwork and knick knacks. With a few runs to HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby and Target, I managed to find everything we needed to complete the living and dining spaces, as well as the entryway and half bath down nearby.
I think it’s important for clients to remember that refreshing your living space doesn’t necessarily mean you have to start from scratch. Although we did replace most of Jaméz’s furnishings, sometimes simple updates like rearranging furniture, adding a new rug, curtains and throw pillows can give a space an entirely new look. These subtle changes and additions improved the way Jaméz felt about her home as the updates reflected her personality, flair and the retreat she was hoping to create as done in her master suite.
Here are the results of our hard work…
AFTER:
I’m so grateful for Jaméz trusting me with additional spaces in her home and referring me to new clients in 2019 and 2020 (#ProjectRoyalEstate, coming soon!). Since completing this project, Jaméz has relocated to a new city, but I’m happy to report, she took all of her new furniture and décor with her and is still enjoying it in her new home!
Until next time, be blessed!
