At the start of the pandemic, Brenda and Kenneth purchased a brand new 4 bed, 3-1/2 bath home in Kennesaw, Georgia. Over the past two years, their family has grown with a new baby girl asI helped them design each space in their home into a cultural and colorful retreat that reflects their heritage and personalities.
At first glance, the entire home was a blank canvas. The main floor was vast with two living spaces, a formal dining room and breakfast nook, kitchen and home office. We’d also transform three bedrooms upstairs, the nursery of which was unplanned but the sweetest surprise! Here’s a visual for direction we’d go in for each space:
BLB MOOD BOARDS:
Let’s begin with the space we designed last. Baby Reina was born in January and we completed her nursery just in the nick of time! We created a blush and boho themed space with shades of pink, neutrals and pops of gold. Although we didn’t paint the room, we added a cute blush peel-and-stick wallpaper to the wall behind the acrylic and white crib, then adorned it with #blackgirlmagic artwork. We kept the furnishings at a minimum to give the family space to add a twin or bunk beds at a later time as Reina grows up and makes the room her own. I am so in love with how it turned out!
NURSERY:
Next, the master suite! We wanted this room to be sexy, bold, and inviting. With the busy lives Brenda and Kenneth lead, I wanted to create a getaway for the two of them to spend time together and truly relax. First, I called my friends in from The Board Room Accent Walls to give them a unique accent wall in a bold color, Sherwin-Williams Cavern Clay. Once completed, we repositioned the new velvet and gold bed and installed new lighting. Believe it or not, everything else in the room was sourced from HomeGoods! That’s right - the bedding, decorative pillows, artwork, swivel rocking chairs AND ottoman! We really found some awesome finds to complete the bedroom design perfectly.
MASTER SUITE:
The dining room might be my favorite I’ve designed in a while! I didn’t take much to put it together. Once I found this beautiful rug, a collaboration between Jonathan Adler and Amazon Home, we just had to have it! From there, I again brought in The Board Room Accent Walls to give a contrasting black backdrop match the dining table and chairs, and to give the room some vibes and texture. Lastly, the artwork and chandelier gave the space more pops of color and glam. It’s now the perfect space to marvel at when entering their home!
DINING ROOM:
The last space was the largest space to complete and included the most pivots over time. Originally the couple purchased the cognac channel sofas from CB2 for the living space, but asked me to help them find something a bit more lounge-worthy and comfortably accommodate visiting family and guests. We moved the leather sofas and original rug and to the sun room, and added neutral sofas and emerald accent chairs to the primary living space. We covered the walls with new artwork and a gallery wall displaying their Kenyan heritage and growing family. We also added counter stools and a small breakfast nook table to the space for the family to enjoy while cooling and entertaining at home.
MAIN FLOOR:
I am SO grateful to Brenda and Kenneth for giving me the opportunity to help me with their beautiful new home over the past two years. I enjoyed getting to know them personally, sharing several laughs through all the hiccups and witnessing the love they share that brought new life into this world. Thank you for trusting me with your family’s home and I can’t wait to work with you again on your home office this summer. <3
